Cedar Shoe Trees
The single best investment you can make in a good pair of shoes: a set of cedar shoe trees. Cedar holds shape, prevents creasing and cracking, and draws out the moisture that breaks leather down from the inside. Plastic trees address creasing only — they don't absorb moisture. We carry the full Rochester line, made in USA.
Rotate Wear
Leather needs 24 hours to breathe and dry between wearings. Never wear the same pair two days running — rotate with a second pair and rest each with cedar shoe trees. Your shoes last longer, and so does your collection.
Cleaning and Polishing Dress Shoes
Clean with leather cleaner — at minimum, a damp cloth. Insert your cedar shoe trees and air dry away from heat; direct heat cracks leather fast. Once dry, work a quality wax polish into the leather with a soft cloth, get into the creases and welt with a small brush, then buff with a horsehair brush. Three to five coats is where the shine deepens and turns mirror-bright — each additional coat adds richness.
Cream polish conditions softer leathers; paste polish drives the higher shine. We typically use cream first, paste second — that combination gets you the best of both.
Work Boots and Oil Tanned Leathers
If footwear has been exposed to dirt or contaminants, clean immediately with a soft brush, then a damp cloth with mild soap or saddle soap. Always clean before treating. Let dry. Treat the leather with a quality footwear oil or wax product on a regular schedule. This will help preserve the leather.
Suede & Nubuck
The key to keeping suede and nubuck in top shape is preventative maintenance. Before you wear the shoes, protect them with a water and stain repellent designed specifically for suede and nubuck. As soon as you notice water isn't beading up, spray them again. Use a suede cleaner and suede brush to keep your shoes looking good. For light color delicate uppers use nylon brush, for durable outdoor shoes you can use a brass brush.
Protective Soles
Adding a sole protector prolongs the life of your shoes tremendously. Stylishly thin, long wearing rubber top sole protects the outer sole from wear and tear. Water resistant and skid proof, protective soles will make any pair of leather soled shoes last a lifetime.
